An Evidence-Based Trauma Treatment for Emotional Healing Without Retraumatization
You Don’t Have to Relive the Past to Heal From It — You Just Have to Process It Safely
If you’ve experienced trauma, you may find that certain memories, emotions, or sensations still feel just as raw as the day they happened. You might avoid reminders, struggle with anxiety, or feel stuck in patterns that no longer make sense. EMDR therapy can help you move forward — without having to talk through every painful detail.
At Neubauer Mental Health Services (NMHS), we offer EMDR therapy as part of our trauma-informed outpatient care. It’s a structured, research-supported approach that helps the brain process unresolved trauma — so you can feel safer, more present, and more in control.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy method that helps people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences by targeting how those memories are stored in the brain.
It uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements or tapping) while focusing on the traumatic memory to help reduce its emotional intensity and allow for healing.
EMDR Is Most Commonly Used For
- PTSD and trauma (including childhood trauma and abuse)
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
- Grief and loss
- Sexual assault or abuse
- Violence, accidents, or medical trauma
- Phobias or persistent fears
- Emotional dysregulation rooted in past experiences
You don’t have to know “what caused it” to benefit. EMDR works by helping your brain and body release the stuck emotional charge behind the memories.

What Happens During EMDR Therapy?
EMDR involves eight structured phases, including:
History taking and treatment planning
Preparation and resourcing (learning grounding skills)
Targeting distressing memories or beliefs
Bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones)
Desensitization and reprocessing of trauma
Replacing negative beliefs with adaptive, positive ones
You are always in control. You do not need to retell every detail. The process is guided, contained, and safe.
